City & County of Honolulu
Haleʻiwa, Hawaii
Proposal
In 2000, the City & County of Honolulu Department of Design & Construction retained the civil engineering firm of Kim + Shiroma Engineers to design roadway improvements for Kamehameha Highway within the town of Haleʻiwa on the north shore of Oʻahu. As a design consultant to Kim + Shiroma, Urban Works developed a streetscape master plan to comprehensively recommend how amenities, such as a pedestrian sidewalk system, landscaping, street trees, lighting, furniture and public open spaces, could be integrated into the engineering improvements.
Working closely with the community, Urban Works developed different options to allow residents and the City to compare benefits and impacts. The urban design study offered a broad, comprehensive examination of possible development opportunities affecting the entire town, serving as a catalyst for future growth.
