Intermodal Center

City & County of Honolulu

Honolulu, Hawaii
Completed 2012

The intermodal center in Kalihi is a major bus and automobile transfer center that is to be integrated with a future HART transit station.  The passenger platform includes seating, a customer service center, two restroom pavilions, administrative space, and a security office.  It has been designed for the convenience, accessibility and safety of its transit patrons.

Because of its location away from populated commercial districts, the design focused on making the roof a beacon for the community which acts as a lantern at night.  The underside of a large butterfly roof provides generous illumination for patrons waiting for connector buses.

The project incorporates a large living wall of hardy, low-maintenance plants, which contributes to evapotranspirative cooling and acoustic performance, as well as providing aesthetic and psychological respite.
